In the fall of 2021, I launched Starfish Digital with little more than an idea, a few industry contacts, and modest funding from friends and family. We were a nascent startup trying to find our footing in a competitive space when a friend introduced me to Allen, an investment advisor in Hong Kong. Although we were quite early-stage for his firm, Allen showed genuine interest in our venture. Fintech wasn’t his primary focus, but he saw potential in our vision. He not only expressed a willingness to invest, but also mobilized his extensive network of subject matter experts to help validate our business model. This early validation was a turning point—it gave us the confidence we needed to press forward and refine our strategy. Then, the market turbulence of 2022 and 2023 hit, disrupting funding for early-stage startups like ours. As a B2B SaaS company still finding product-market fit, the timing couldn’t have been worse. “Many of our competitors folded, but Allen’s foresight helped us pivot strategically.” He introduced us to more patient private equity investors who provided the lifeline we needed to survive the downturn. Beyond funding, Allen connected us with seasoned entrepreneurs who had weathered similar storms and successfully led turnarounds. His mentorship was invaluable, not just for the business, but for my growth as a leader. In those darkest moments, when survival seemed uncertain, Allen’s support was the anchor that kept us afloat. Looking back, the entrepreneurial journey isn’t just about scaling a business; it’s about personal transformation. “Every challenge in the journey forces you to adapt, and every success is a result of meeting the right people at the right time.” My relationship with Allen has evolved over the years—from a connection introduced by a friend to an investor, a trusted advisor, and now a cherished friend who sits on our Board of Directors. Through him, I learned that while you can’t control every twist and turn in the journey, you can control how you nurture the relationships that shape your path forward.
